Sinopsis Buku Kiai Ibrahim and Why People Become Yogyan

Buku Kiai Ibrahim and Why People Become Yogyan |

Buku ini ditulis dalam bahasa Inggris, buku ini adalah sebuah proses perjalanan hidup, sebuah pemikiran tentang kehidupan masyarakat, dan jurnal dari seorang tokoh bernama Kiai Ibrahim.

This book is a journal about a process. It is about the thoughts that started to tumble in my head once started to pursue the question which for some reason went deep, touched something personal. Which perhaps had to do with who my father was, and why I am an alienated Yogyan (I know the formal word is Yogyanese, but that sounds like a Yoga Chinese. Yogyan sounds cool. Like some something out of Star Wars). It started with a question by kiai Ibrahim: ―Why do people from all areas in Indonesia become Yogyans after living in Yogya for some time? Even these coarse Batak become alus (refined). And the bules too. They forget they‘re British or Swedish. And this is not what happens in other cities. Like Jakarta, of even Solo. It happens in Yogya.‖ This question came after some time spent on a survey in Yogyakarta.
Kiai Ibrahim had two friends, pak (Mr.) Yusuf and his brother pak Kazan. These brothers were originally from Yogya but went to school in Jakarta, made their career in business and politics, which go often together—one leading to the other. They wanted to have a business in Yogya, for  sentimental reasons perhaps, and asked kiai Ibrahim to advise them on the matter.
Kiai Ibrahim is not the kind of kiai running a religious boarding school and wearing white garments. He is actually a professor in statistics and econometric at a university in Jakarta. But he was an important Nahdatul Ulama or NU functionary, head of the waqaf agency (which is in charge of allocating and managing property and money donated to a religious organization) and is on the board of a university in Solo also owned by the NU, Indonesia‘s largest religious organization. Formally, NU is not a sect or denomination; it is called an ormas or mass organization, a rather ambiguous term for interchangeable with social movement. It adheres to a ―traditionalist‖ interpretation of Islam, distinctive from other ormas such as Muhammadyah which is called ―modernist‖. Traditionalist means, an interpretation of Islam which doesn‘t exclude indigenous cultural patterns, its stress is on the spiritual and not on ritual, on historical context and not only on text. As opposed to for example to Salafi literalism which by NU people is sometimes called the Arab way of Islam. NU stands for ―Islam Nusantara‖, or Indonesian Islam, and kiai Ibrahim himself is an advocate of universal Islam; one is a Muslim because of his values and attitudes rather than his or her formal creed. Both concepts are hotly contested by the Salafi and it is good that Indonesian law doesn‘t allow the formation of armed militias.
